I sometimes wince at what I have done but the important thing is, like you, I have come to realize what I've done. I figure the best way to honor others is to be aware of audism and move in a more positive direction toward the deaf community.Barinthusxanga.com/barinthusnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148354.post-80375455558225869642006-11-12T03:19:00.000-08:002006-11-12T03:19:00.000-08:00Thanks everybody for the postive comments, i was n...Thanks everybody for the postive comments, i was nervous that people would hate me! I am sure this post will piss some people off. But from personal experience, i have found that by confessing things about myself that I am not so proud of, in turn often helps me stop doing/thinking these things and truly move toward a better Zoée.

p.s anonymous, i also pondered on that as well. I know it is common for people who have learning disabilities to be able to be fluent and comphrend things with no problems via ASL. But there was something about Anna that made me think she could of been fine if she had a strong support system? Maybe I'm wrong though. I never really did ask if she had a learning disability. I just pretty much accepted and loved her as she was when I was a child.Zoée Nuagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17797376627238473744noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148354.post-38815675448765720272006-11-11T19:01:00.000-08:002006-11-11T19:01:00.000-08:00Thank you for sharing this story! I have taught classes on diversity so I have seen first hand that not everyone has the insight you demonstrate here to examine themselves for potential bias and prejudice (we all have them, its part of being human). Then you go on to make a sincere effort to eradicate these prejudices.

If I were still teaching classes in diversity, I would be tempted to assign your essay here as required reading!

One thing I want to note, though. You question whether this girl, Anna, really had a reading-related learning disability based on the fact that she understood and learned things fine through ASL.

My understanding is that research has been done on this and has found that people with reading-related learning disabilities (for example, dyslexia) CAN and do learn and use ASL fine, whether they are deaf or hearing.

So the fact that Anna was clearly quite intelligent, and understood things so well in ASL, does not necessarily perclude the possibility that she did have a learning disability as well. I have known intelligent people with learning disabilities (deaf and hearing) who have made it through graduate school, even gotten PhDs. They do have to work harder to get there than most people. And if their disability is reading-related then they might always read more slowly than most (though they reach the same level of comprehension in the end). But they can get there.

I don't necessarily perclude the idea that Anna could have been misdiagnosed. Maybe she was. There isn't enough information here to judge. Misdiagnosis can go BOTH ways. Children who shouldn't get the label sometimes get slapped with it anyway -- and end up with the associated stigma and inappropriately lowered expectations. But, conversely, children who NEED the official diagnosis to get services that allow them to perform in school up to their TRUE (disability-masked) potential may slip through the cracks altogether. (I was not diagnosed with my attention deficit disorder until graduate school!) Either way, children can be harmed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148354.post-57708375614476258752006-11-11T16:41:00.000-08:002006-11-11T16:41:00.000-08:00What a heart of humanity!

If I were there in TX, I'd be out driving right now to get to your place and give you a bear hug!
