Vlog on 'Through Deaf Eyes'

Ok i'll warn you guys first. If you have read my blog before you will already know that I grew up using SEE and still do today pretty much, i know a bit of ASL and really would love to make the leap from SEE to ASL, but it has been tough so far as i only have local hearing signing friends who don't understand ASL. Bah, heh. I can understand ASL but i have a tough time thinking in ASL and signing in ASL. This this video is pretty much signed in SEE, sloppy SEE at that one. My apologizes if you can't understand me, i would add subtitles but i have not figured that one out just yet but i will sooner than later!

This is my second vlog ever [i wont show the first one! It's horrible! Heh], so bear with me. There's a few times when i clearly stopped the webcam and started over again. I want to start doing vlogs more because it gives me the one place where i can work harder on adjusting to ASL and just basically signing to my fullest capacity which i don't get to do too often. Oh also the movie editing program i'm using apparently just plastered an ugly statement about how i need to purcahse the program on the video itself, bah. Sorry about that and the bad resolution :( Anybody have any suggestions for free movie editing programs?

Written English Translation:

Hi, I have been watching all the vlogs on DeafRead.com about 'Through Deaf Eyes'. I've enjoyed your opinions on the movie. I've seen many people saying how they want more vlogs, more vlogs. So i decided to go ahead and make a vlog. Really the reason why I have not made a vlog before is because I know my signing is not that good. I grew up using SEE, Signed Exact English. So, i'm a but uncomfortable with people watching me signing on a vlog because well you all are good at ASL and I am not, heh. But i'm working on it.

Moving on... I'll talk about the movie. I enjoyed it, I knew most of of the things that was on the movie because I have read many books on that topic. But i thought it was pretty good. Good for hearing people, or deaf people who do not know anything about the history of Deaf people and so on. But i do wish that they included more information about ASL, Bi/Bi education, Deaf Culture. Because that topic is not very well known in the hearing world. My friends are always surprised to know that there's such a thing as Deaf culture and culturally Deaf people or so on. So i thought it would be really important and was hoping that the movie would show more about that but there was not really, there was very little about that. I was dissapointed but ah...

I think they should have gone more in depth on many different topics, but still good for the people who are oblivious about those things. I'm very happy to see that on tv... and hope that there will be more in the future.

Things I wasn't happy about the movie... was that, you remember the part with the parents with the deaf boy? The deaf boy said that he was lucky to have parents who sign as some don't sign, as we all know... But i noticed how the parents did not sign in front of their child - sometimes they signed and sometimes they did not? I was puzzled/upset by that. But then i read on vlogs that there was an interpreter that was not shown on the tv. But still why did mom & dad decide to speak? What's the point? Why not show themselves signing all the time? Also i noticed how the father did not sign at all?

So I was generally happy with what I saw, i wish there was more but I'm satisfied... I know there's only so much you can put in two hours long movie so.. fine. I hope there will be more in the future and that it will be more in depth about ASL & Deaf culture and things that are more specifically about deaf people who are culturally Deaf, with a captial Deaf.

Uhh, so I guess that's all. I will try to make more vlogs because i need the practice with ASL. I don't really have the chance to practice ASL that much, so this will be perfect for me... and please be patient with me heh. Okay... Hope you have a nice day, bye.

this is mike from beaumont. first of all, your hair looks flawless. totally cute. now that that's outta the way...i watched the documentary the other night on the pbs (one of the few stations i watch religiously), and i was immediately drawn in. i wasn't sure what to expect, but, in the end, it didn't matter as after about 15 minutes i had already resigned mahself to the fact that i would be watching the whole thing. i loved the structure and the (almost) cold reality of the film. it was amazing, intriguing and somewhat spell-binding to watch the assorted characters be interviewed and express their thoughts on the multiple topics and the history of their own lives. an immense amount of knowledge that i had no clue about was touched upon (from alexander graham bell and his oral obsession to the structure of deaf education thru the years and the foreign impact on it). another thing i liked about the film was it's history on one of my favourite sub-topics...ironical irony in american history. case in point, the association for the deaf that was originally formed to protect and create a national community for deaf people...but, at the same time, banned black deaf people from joining. these veins of bigotry that appear all throughout our nations history in some of our most noble causes has always fascinated me, and it was nice to see that it crosses all possible social boundaries. this was one of the most enjoyable and informative documentaries that i've watched in quite some time. if you're ill-informed, it'll inform you. if you're unsympathetic, it'll teach you empathy. if you are sympathetic, it'll teach you not to be. this all goes back to the structure of the film, the contradictions, the reality, the history and life of this whole segment of society that most people are completely disconnected from. not being deaf mahself and, sadly, having only one deaf friend, leaves me unable to grasp the (surely) multiple omissions and slight offenses that the show also perpetrated (some of which you pointed out in your post here). but regardless, i consider mahself a better person for having watched it, and i wait in anticipation for the next documentary of this caliber to hit our publicly funded airwaves.

ps - zoee rocks the party. even if she isn't there.

Sure, like Mike C noticed your hair, I noticed your sign language, but that quickly passed by. I watched YOU and YOUR message, and that is what mattered.

And because I am able to understand you, is because you used sign language, as George Veditz says, is the noblest gift God gave to the Deaf.

You did give a NICE review.

Continue vLogging and throw away your concerns.

Welcome to Vlog.. Most of us understand about Deaf people came from different background but please don't feel that we reject you because of the way you raised in SEE. Some people who choose to reject you because of your signing. It is just that they are idiot.I understand you. YOu did a good job. Keep vlogging.

Hellllllllllo!!!! :D

I thought you did great - you got your message across and your opinion is valued as much as anyone else's - whether it be blog or vlog!

Like you, I was not comfortable with my signing with my growing up in SEE, then switched to PSE.

I still don't believe some people telling me I am using ASL, but whatever. :D

Keep vlogging and join the club!

And you will be amazed that with your addiction to DR will greatly improve your ASL reception and signing skills!!

What a lovely young woman! I admire you greatly for vlogging when you feel "self concious" about your method of sign language. You did SOMETHING right, because your English is very good. Obviously the SEE method did it's job.

Will be looking forward to seeing more of you!

Not too bad, we can understand your sign. You don't have to be perfect! ASL is where we can count that important for Deaf community. (smile)

As one who grew up using some form of SEE exclusively and later, at the age of 17, picked up "real ASL," I can see you are capable of improving your ASL skill! No worries there. Your face and body movements are already there; you just need more exposure to the "give-and-take" part of ASL communication. Practicing through vlogs and watching vlogs of ASL signers will help some but live, as in-person, interaction will help immensely. Or even watching ASL users around you talk to each other. :) Like Jay said, ASL users understood you because you SIGNED! So, thank you for getting up the gumption to do this vlog and I look forward to more from you.

As for the film, yeah, at the end, I thought it needed more of this and that, until I realized that: 1.) it’s only 2 hours long, 2.) it’s made by hearing people for hearing people, and 3.) it was based on an exhibit on the history of the deaf in the U.S. I really appreciate the review above by Mike C. I also care what hearing people thought of the film since it is essentially made for the hearing audience.

What I would like to see is a film crafted through the prism of ASL and Deaf Culture, made by Deaf people, that is somehow accessible to the hearing audience too - so we can educate them while we are being informed and entertained!

Hi there,
I enjoyed watching you sign and your message (I used to sign SEE :-)). Your perspective was really cool. The fact that you are part of the DeafRead community shows you are part of us, not the other side. Ya know what I mean?

What is SEE? FYI - I do not recognize SEE anymore but I say that ALL of us sign ASL period. It is just that we sign ASL in different ways. If we look at English, there are many different ways to write English too.

WELCOME to vlogsphere and I look forward to see more of 'Busy Hands" vlogs!

Upon broseing thru the net for "Vlog" via search engine. Stumbled onto this part.

First of all I want to congratulate you for doing the Vlog. Please dont fret on ur type of Sign Language.

There are various of types of ASL so keep that in mind ! I use to teach Sign Language class back then & did extensively reasearch on my own.

Someday I would too create a Vlog & have lots to say. Myself PSE leaning toward to ASL. Though am Hard of Hearing most of all my life. Grew up mainstreamed in Chicago,Illinois. Guess . . yes AGB

..Sigh After find of many hidden & dark secrets which never knew & appalled !

Again, keep up the good job & strive for thebetter as you go !
